I think it's more of a case of... who do we think is most likely to be attacked when someone is not in the right state if mind, versus for something like an apple?
I think the assumption has been based on so far only one person has been affected each week that we know of.
If it comes down to it, we may need to figure it out based on the actions of caught culprits, but that would require us catching them first and having enough time left to analyze their behavior.
