I think how people can improve can be different. Maybe someone missed out on a lot in life and caused trouble by being a hermit and not interacting as much with others. Maybe they lost out on understanding how much fun it could be with others.
They could be examined to see how much they stick to their old ways, or if they're willing to show how they can try something new. So if they're willing to splash around in the water when they'd never usually be caught doing that, isn't that a sign of change?
That's a good start as any. Who says you can't take the time for that? Even if it's only eight or so weeks, the adjustment is part of living, too. [ or dying. ] How you adapt reflects your character.
