Basically, yes. There is a human, the Master, and then a Heroic Spirit, the Servant. The Servant cannot exist without being tied to a Master, so if the Master dies, the Servant also will. But a Master cannot compete without having a Servant, so even if a Master lives, if they lost their Servant then they lose.
